Spinach–a green vegetable that has created so much furore in US with some reported viruses infecting it; and in fact, going on to kill a person due to contamination–is back in the news; though it is beneficial this time. It has been reported that skin cancer can be avoided by the use of this vegetable: the reported benefit of spinach comes from an Australian research.
The scientists of Australia have investigated the impacts of healthy dietary habits on skin cancer, and it has been discovered that green vegetables can help the consumers guard against the disease, which is very common in Australia due to depleted ozone layer. The scientists have found that spinach and silverbeet are linked with a reduction in the risk of skin cancer, particularly among the patients who have a history of this disease. The chances of better protection against this costliest cancer are reported to be around 55% in the people who have a history of this disease.
Dr Jolieke van der Pols, who hails from the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, has stated that these vegetables contain a variety of such vitamins, minerals, and other bioactive substances that are potentially known to have some anti-cancer properties. It is known to us also that green leafy vegetables are good sources of folic acid, vitamins A, C and E, and some other substances that help boost the skin’s natural defense against damage caused by UV rays. And this is where spinach and silverbeet comes handy–they make our skin more powerful in its natural defense against the problem of skin cancer.
Let’s put in a straight perspective: green leafy vegetables and food items are good for our health and we need to incorporate their use in our daily dieting menu. We need to ensure that children are made habitual in eating such kinds of food items and they are moved away from junk and fast food, which is creating problems to so many parts of human body.
