  • Obesity exceeds drinking or smoking in worse-ness
    Tuesday, Dec. 19th 2006 1:10 AM

You would have wondered sometimes that drinking or smoking could not be ever excelled in terms of worse-ness. However, according to a new government study from UK, obesity has been termed as more dangerous to health than smoking and drinking. The statement has been released by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). The ongoing problem of obesity that has rocked the whole of Europe has become more serious in England in the last 25 years. It has been noticed that in England, 1/3 of women and nearly 1/2 of men are overweight now.
The statistics provided by NICE are clearly startling and frightening from that point of view: there are total 24 million adults in UK who are overweight or obese. Children are also not spared or excluded from this problem: among the country’s children, 16% are obese. What could make you more astonished is the fact that NICE expects or foresees 1/5 of children growing obese in the coming four years, which will take the percentage to 20.

Though many may still argue that there are not many complications involved with obesity, as is the case with either drinking or smoking. However, experts from NICE and almost all over the world acknowledge the fact that obesity is as potentially dangerous as smoking or drinking is. If we move to America, it has been found through public health researches that for every 100 obese men and women, there are 50 extra chronic diseases in comparison to about 20 extra diseases among those who had ever smoked.

The health specialists are working hard to bring total awareness among the consumers about the food items and life-style that they should adopt to avoid falling prey to obesity. They are asking government agencies, councilors, schools, and other bodies to join in the effort so that a total concept against obsity could be chalked out that could serve the purpose.
