  • Food ads may face regulations for enhancing obesity epidemic
    Friday, Jan. 12th 2007 6:43 AM

We have come to a point where obesity has become a national talk–even the government is forced to look at all the aspects of the problem that might be contributing to the growth of obesity. Children obesity is one of the topmost agendas of the government, and many laws are being formulated to curb this epidemic. It has been reported by many studies and researches that targeting the children through food-ads is one of the major reason which incite children to eat unhealthy food, which is full of excessive fat–often called fast and junk food. We will very shortly see some sort of regulations being levied on the food industry, which will make them desist from targeting the children in their ads.

It is noticeable here that many companies have already started out to sort this problem–we have read that many companies have banned the use of trans-fats in their food items, and some of them have proclaimed that they would not target children about the food which is poor in nutritional quality.

In November, 10 companies that are involved in producing food and drink ads for kids under 12 stated that they would be producing more healthy life-style and nutritional food item ads in the future, which is of course a positive sign from the food industry. However, it is clear that citing the example of these companies and others who have banned some unhealthy ingredients of their products, marketers would challenge the regulations that we expect to come out–they would say that food industry and their partners, the marketing industry, is already working reasonably and with proper care to the need of food regulations that are geared towards solving the problem of obesity. We would have a good session where arguments and counter-arguments would be given in each other’s defense–we will need to to wait and watch!
