Diet control and exercise yield same results
    Jan. 27th 2007 5:04 AM

Overweight and obesity require a rigorous amount of exercise, though some diet programs also stress on the fact that diet control is a better option to lose extra pounds. There are different and equally proven theories that both types of methods work for achieving the motive of getting thin. However, in a recent research, it has been found that eating less and exercising more are equally good at helping to lose weight. The research is clearly a good response to the questions that prevail in the multi-billion dollar diet and fitness industry.

“It’s all about the calories,” said Dr Eric Ravussin of the Pennington Biomedical Research Centre, which is a part of Louisiana State University. “So long as the energy deficit is the same, body weight, fat weight, and abdominal fat will all decrease in the same way.”

The results of the research were published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. The basic idea of the study is geared to provide a better solution, which lies in between both diet and exercise. It has been suggested that a combination of controlled diet and good exercise can given the results in an efficient way.

Most people are concerned about the decision that they need to take while joining some fitness or weight-loss program–some of such programs emphasize on rigorous exercise, while some of them focus on the controlled diet and the benefits it imparts. However, as clear from the above study, it is one and the same thing–no one is better than the other: you can achieve the results either way, and you can choose the way according to your present conditions and preferences.

However, generally talking, we can easily note that exercise yields best results when it is accompanied with some good eating-habits. So, the final words would be like this study suggests–it is a combination of dieting and exercise that will work for you.

Scientists seek causes for obesity besides overeating
    Jan. 21st 2007 3:10 AM

Generally, almost all the health specialists and doctors across the world refer to overeating as the main problem behind the epidemic of obesity. If you ask from somebody that how can you reduce your weight, people will refer to you about various dieting habits and programs that can help you to achieve your goal. However, it has been reported and noticed many times that people are not able to reduce their weight, though they followed all the regimes of dieting programs and did everything that was asked from them. Again, it has been reported that many doctors are now looking at other possible causes of obesity, apart from the conventional approach of overeating and dieting.

Some of the causes that are reported to be responsible for obesity, though their intensity may not be same as overeating, are: hormonal disorders such as thyroid problems; metabolic disorders; conditions brought on by pre-diabetes; and side effects from medications.

It is clear that there might be some medical reasons also that are linked with the outbreak of obesity–outbreak because the problem of obesity has gripped almost whole of the world, and may countries are reporting the issue of obesity as an epidemic. It has been widely believed that overeating and more intake of calories are the root causes of obesity, coupled with the fact of reduced physical activity and lower burning of calories. However, many people suffer from obesity due to other reasons that are purely medical in nature and have nothing to do with the diet or physical activity.

However, it won’t be wrong to say that we will come to a point where other issues would also be discussed before advising anybody to take up some dieting courses or programs that limit the diet and propel to exercise, when the actual reason for obesity may turn out to be some medical conditions.

Old age people can also benefit from diet and exercise
    Jan. 15th 2007 1:28 AM

Child obesity has been acclaimed as the worst health problem that the world is facing today. The main reason for this alarming problem is that these children have a high rate of being grown into obese adults and carry this obesity into their old age. This is where heart, cardiovascular, and diabetes problems come into fore and cause much problems. However, according to a new study, it has been found that it should not be deemed as too late for obese adults to improve their heart risks through diet and exercise. Diet control and exercise obviosuly are two of the most-advised methods to improve the health, and avoid being overweight.

The study was conducted on 27 obese men and women aged around 65 years or older. The study found that lowering the value of calories and exercising do help participants to shed pounds. The reductin in weight was also accompanied with lower blood pressure, blood sugar, and blood fats, which of course is a great sign. The results of this study were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

It does not sound too good to many people who maintain that it is relatively of less importance that old people should lose weight, and sometimes, it is pretty difficult for them to change their life-style, which sometimes becomes stringent for them and can cause other problems. However, the findings of this new study show that older obese adults can indeed alter their lifestyle, and benefit from it.

It is true that this study is a small one; however, its implications can reach wider scales if more research is carried out on this issue. We will be able to see a better picture if more study is taken up and if researchers could come to a agreed conclusion. This study has surely laid a good question before the health specialists and researchers.

Knowledge may turn out bad for you
    Jan. 3rd 2007 3:48 AM

Well, this is something very unusual, but we need to venture into this news in order to look at the matter from a close angel. It has been reported that acquiring too much knowledge about dieting and weight loss does not always yield good consequences for the simple reason that you do not know how to implement or use that knowledge in a proper and efficient way. Knowledge is always said to be a dangerous weapon if not used for good causes, and this is where our present talk concentrates–reading too many dieting articles in magazines and perhaps on websites could lead to risky dieting practices later by people who have not understood what they have read.

This sounds too much philosophical, but it has been proved by a new study led by Patricia van den Berg, PhD. from University of Minnesota and colleagues. The team found that teenage girls, who read magazine articles about dieting and weight loss often, were three time more likely to practice extreme dieting and weight loss measures, which sometimes include vomiting and using laxatives than people who do not read such articles.

Well, it can be well understood that this research has not downplayed the role of magazines in expanding the awareness among the people to engage in better dieting habits; however, it has pointed out a fact that teenage girls are more prone to practice extreme dieting steps, which are not necessary if they can work out a good planned schedule to keep themselves fit and healthy. We can easily note that yes, knowledge does not give you results–it is the implementation of that knowledge into proper methods that brings results and helps you in achieving your goals, in whichever sphere of life you may try it. This research has clearly pointed a good point in the present time, when dieting and weight loss is the prime issue among youngesters.

Can low-fat diets prevent the return of breast cancer
    Dec. 18th 2006 12:59 AM

This question lingers on and on; however, there are some research-based results that can shed some light on this matter–in a first ever experiment conducted to show that low-fat diets could help prevent a return of breast cancer reveals that the benefit was almost exclusively to women that experienced the tumor growth not driven by hormones. It is very heartening to see that such a study was conducted and with such a large follow-up. Though the results can’t prove it, but they still suggest that these women could be able to cut their risk of dying by up to 66%, if they stick to such kind of diets.

The results are encouraging, but it is not for the women whose cancer are due to the hormones. Unluckily, this is the case with the vast majority of breast cancer patients, and there seems little effect that the diet change seemed to make. Another question that remains unanswered is that whether the patients who have experienced some benefit are actually helped by cutting fat or by the weight loss that resulted. It is clear that there might be more questions that the health specialists would like to know, and more research might be needed to explore these areas. However, the study has surely opened a new way to get to the root of things that are related to any relation between low-fat diets and the reoccurrence of breast cancer.

The preliminary findings of this illustrious study were reported at a cancer conference in 2005, and these will appear in this week’s Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The study presented more updated results with longer follow-up on many of the original participants on Saturday at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. We can clearly see that this will fuel-up the research on breast cancer and the relation with low-fat diets, and perhaps we might be able to develop a comprehensive relationship that could lead to help the women suffering from it.

Western Australia puts ban of red food
    Dec. 3rd 2006 1:11 AM

What you can expect more or else than this–deep fried foods, pastries, and soft drinks will be banned from West Australian public schools, which makes a part of the State Government’s fight against the much talked-about and much-feared obesity epidemic that has snared over the children of almost the whole world.

Premier Alan Carpenter, while launching the new nutritional guidelines for school canteens, has also stated that the students from year 1-10 will also need to take part in at least two hours of physical activity per week during school time–though at this point, we don’t know how these two hours will be drafted from the school timings or whether they will be given extra.

What has propelled such a prompt and strict action on the part of the government, as we can expect that children will not be very happy from this decision? –the reason is an ongoing study, which involves the University of Western Australia, and it shows that 1 in 5 primary school children in Western Australia are overweight or obese. It has also been noticed that the children aging 6 years are having problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, and liver problems–problems directly related to obesity.

It is clear that the government is really concerned about the health of the kids that are of course the future of the country–the plans that they have chalked to tackle the problem is a very good one, and is perhaps the most basic one: children grow what they eat. It is one of the famous adage sort of line that health specialists say. Children will surely not like to get this news–but, we as elders, would need to make them understand that this is for their own good–control on diet and life-style can really solve the problem of obesity, which is very difficult to solve at the later stage of life.

    Eating slow means eating less
    Dec. 2nd 2006 12:44 AM

If you are overweight and have tried many weight loss program, and have not been successful in reducing or controlling your appetite, which is thwarting all your efforts to grow thinner, here comes  a news that you would like–a new study has revealed what could be the first-ever scientific proof that if you eat slowly, you will eat less. Moreover, it is also stated that you would enjoy the meal more.

This would sound like some advice that your granny or grandpa might have given you in the childhood–but it is official now that it has some impact on your eating habits and how much you eat. The study has revealed that women consumed about 70 fewer calories when they were told to take their time eating a meal of pasta and sauce–these women also rated that the meal tasted more pleasant when they ate slowly.

The study was conducted on 30 young women, which involved eating a meal of ditalini with tomato and vegetable sauce, topped with Parmesan cheese, under two different conditions–one slowly and one fast. Before each meal, these women had eaten a standard 400-calorie breakfast, and then were made to fast for four hours.

It has long been said that everybody should eat slowly–it also helps in proper digestion of the food, but if we can reduce our appetite by eating slowly, it will be doubly good for us. We need to obey the old advice coupled with scientific proof that yes, eating slow makes us eat less. Almost all the weight loss program stress on the habit of eating less and controlling the calories that you intake. Further, these programs also stress that you should expend the calories that you intake by doing physical exercise and going for walking in the morning and evening. So, it would make a good sense to try out this also–eating slowly and enjoying the food more.

Putting a Check on weight loss expenditure
    Nov. 5th 2006 3:15 AM

If you are a regular reader about the news of weight loss, you might be already knowing that the weight loss costs are soaring in the country. The irony of the situations is that people are desperate to try out any weight loss program without analyzing the effectiveness of that program. There are hundreds of crash weight loss programs that claim their effectiveness, and people in their haste, waste their money and time–weight lost by these crash courses return soon after the course is completed.

In a very recent survey by Obesity Society, it has been found that around 60% people believe that the weight loss supplements that are sold in the market are tested and have a proven record of effectiveness. More than 50% people believe that these weight loss products are reviewed and approved by FDA. This is a total misconception that adds to the problem. There is no prevailing rule that weight loss supplements and products should be tested before selling; and therefore, you can’t buy or try any product due to your own misconception that it is tested and approved by FDA.

Specialists and researchers are analyzing the situation of obese people and the statistics are alarming–around two-third of Americans are obese. No wonder that this is a critical situation where expenditure on weight loss program is increasing and people are growing desperate. Children face maximum problems in being obese, as they also have to face psychological and social problems. It should be clearly understood that weight loss programs can’t work for you until you yourself are determined to shed extra pounds. So, analyze the procedure of weight loss programs before you choose to buy it, and match it with your life style. If you think that you will be able to move along its recommendations, you can buy it; otherwise, you should choose some other weight loss program.
