Outbreaks caused by the contamination of food items are on a rise. It has been reported by around 21 US states that there are around 183 cases of people affected with Salmonella. US health officials have found out the cause of Salmonella outbreak to be the contaminated tomatoes. However, there is no food warning yet from the officials. This particular outbreak was at its peak in the month of September, and FDA suggests that the problem seems to be under control now.
If you remember, we had another similar incident when the FDA warned in September to clear the supermarket shelves from spinach. A few days, it was found that the contaminated spinach was grown in California. E. Coli has contaminated it, and it killed one person and hospitalized nearly 100 others.
However, the officials feel that there is no need of issuing a warning in respect to the present discovery–the contaminated tomatoes are believed to be already eaten, destroyed, or thrown. However, it is just only a step forward–we will also need to know where and how those Salmonella bacteria entered the tomatoes. It is interesting to know that the hardest hit states by this outbreak were Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Minnesota. So, the attention will be fixed there to find out how Salmonella entered the tomatoes.
Salmonella is a dangerous bacterium that can cause serious infections in children. These serious infections sometimes turn into fatal ones and can affect even elderly people also. No wonder that within a short period of time, it has affected so many people across the country. We will again need to wait till the health officials get to the root of the problem and lay bare the reasons about Salmonella entering the tomatoes. Moreover, it will be also interesting to know that where these tomatoes were grown!
